A very long time ago, in Egypt, a very clever man made a magic harp. It played music and
made people happy. They were dancing, singing and laughing. The sun was shining bright
in the sky. Their children were playing. There was harmony everywhere.
The harp was kept in pharaoh's room.
But one night, someone sneaked into pharaoh's room and stole the harp. No one saw
where the thief went. The diviners told that the thief hid the harp inside of the Sphinx.
Some people believed their words, but feared to go and find the harp. And others didn’t
believe and thought that the harp is lost forever.
Days passed. Without the magic sounds of the harp, people became sad and evil. The sky
went dark. The pharaoh decided to send someone to find the magic harp. He told his
_ Look for someone that can find the harp and bring to my palace.
His servants started searching. One of them went to the farthest village of Egypt.
In that village an orphaned girl, named Salim lived with her step-mother. Salim was very
wise, but her step-mother hated her and always hit her with a cane. She did everything to
Then one day one of the servants came to her house and told the pharaoh's order. When
Salim heard the order she thought: “This is my chance to run away from my step-mother”.
_ I will go to find the harp. Take me to the pharaoh’s palace.
She got on the horse with the servant and they rode to pharaoh’s palace.
When the pharaoh saw Salim, he couldn’t believe his eyes. “How is this little girl going to
find the harp?!” he thought.
_ Are you sure you can find the harp?-said the pharaoh, - you are too young for that
_ Yes, your Majesty. I have enough strength for that, - answered Salim.
_Well, go now.
Then he turned to his servants:
_ Take her to my barn and give her a horse.
So, she set off to find the magic harp. She rode to the Sphinx, kneeled and said a prayer.
When she finished, the Sphinx’s eyes shone a bright light and he revived. He asked:
You came here to ask me a question, didn’t you?
_ Yes, - answered Salim, - The diviners told that the magic harp is hidden inside you. Is
_It is true. While the thief was asleep, I hid the harp in me to keep it safe from him. But
it is hard to get it back.
You must find the Sacred Staff of Ptah, the Ring of goddess Ra and the Eye of Amon. Then you will get the harp back.
_ Thank you for the advice, - said Salim.
She got on her horse and rode to find the staff, the ring and the eye.
She was far away from her village, when she noticed that the path is divided to three
paths. Then she saw an old man sitting near them. « Perhaps he knows where these paths
go» thought Salim and asked:
_ Dear old man, could you tell me where these paths go?
_ First path goes to Zafar, second path goes to Panashi and third one goes to Sabba.
She thanked the old man and went along the first path. She reached to a desert and decided
to stay there till tomorrow. But then she saw two men walking in the desert. One of them
_ I heard that the queen of Zafar is ill and nobody can heal her. Do you know the cure
of her disease?
_ Yes, I do, - answered the other man, - You have to pick a dahlia flower, a leaf of a
palm tree, berry of a wild blackcurrant, a drop of pumpkin oil and a root of dandelion. Put
them in boiling water and when the potion is ready give it to queen and she will be healed.
Salim was listening carefully.
Next morning she quickly rode to Zafar. She reached to queen's palace and servants
_Who are you? Why did you come here?
_ I am the world's best healer and I came here to heal your queen.
The servants let her in and she said:
_ Do what I say, the queen will be healed.
All the maids and servants ran and brought everything she said.
Salim made the potion and gave it to the queen. The queen drank the potion and got healed. She said:
_ I am grateful to you, little girl. You saved my life. How can I help you?
_ I am looking for the Sacred Staff of Ptah, the Ring of goddess Ra and the
Eye of Amon.
Could you give me one of these things?
_ Yes. I will give you the Ring of goddess Ra and some money.
She nodded and her servants brought the ring and some money. Salim picked the ring
and money, bowed and went away.
She went out of Zafar and rode to Panashi.
It was getting dark when she got to Panashi. She decided to sleep in an inn. The inn was
next to the king's palace.
Before she went to sleep she looked in her window and saw thieves who were trying to
rob the king’s palace. The guards were sleeping and the windows were open wide. « I don’t
want them to steal anything. I must stop them. » thought Salim. She went out of the inn,
ran to the castle and started to shout and make a lot of noise. The guards woke up and
caught the thieves.
The next morning, the king called Salim to his palace and said:
_ If not you, my palace would be robbed. Thank you for stopping the thieves. How can I
_ I am looking for the Sacred Staff of Ptah and the Eye of Amon. Do you have one of these
_ I have the Eye of Amon, - replied he king, - It is the symbol of my power and glory.
But I will give it to you.
The servants brought the Eye of Amon. She picked the eye, thanked the king and went
The last city was Sabba. She got on her horse and went to find the Sacred Staff of Ptah.
She decided to go to the king's palace, hoping that the staff is there. She went there and
The king asked:
_What do you need little girl?
_ I am here for the Sacred Staff of Ptah. Can you give it to me?
_ Well, I have the staff. But you must answer my questions. Then I will give it to you.
_ All right.
_The first question: What is the best thing in the world?
_The peace and friendship between people, your Majesty, - answered Salim.
_Well said. The second question: What is the worst thing in the world?
_The war and hate between people, your Majesty.
_ Third question: How to change people for the better?
_To change people for the better, you must change yourself for the better, your Majesty, - answered Salim.
The king then said:
_You are very wise and you deserve to have the Sacred Staff of Ptah.
He clapped his hands and servants brought the staff.
Now, when she had all the things, she travelled back to Egypt. She went to the Sphinx
and put the holy items beside him. The sun shone on them and they threw beams of light
at the Sphinx. The Sphinx revived and said:
_You brought the items and now you may have the harp back.
A small door appeared on Sphinx's chest. Salim opened the door, walked into a small room
and picked the harp. She went to her village.
The sounds of the magic harp brought back the happiness and kindness of people and
the sky turned blue again.
_ I am grateful to you for bringing back the harp. You saved my king
dom. And I will give you a big gift: I will give you my throne and you will rule the Egypt.
But Salim’s step-mother screamed:
_How could you give her the power over Egypt?! She will ruin our kingdom! She will
make people starve to death! All will perish!
Salim was speechless, but the pharaoh said angrily:
_ Exile her!
The soldiers came and took her away. Then Salim said:
_ Your Majesty, I am too young to be a ruler.
_Don’t worry, - answered the pharaoh, - I will help you to make decisions.
_ Thank you, your Majesty, - Salim said happily.
So, Salim became the ruler of Egypt. When she grew up, she started to make decisions
on her own. She was a wise ruler and helped all the people in Egypt. Then she married the
pharaoh and lived happily ever after.
